Should You Get Your Own Swimming Pool?

To get a pool or not get a pool - that is the question.

To get a pool or not get a pool - that is the question.

Many people make the unfortunate mistake of buying a swimming pool without realizing how much they would actually use it. Others make the mistake of wanting a swimming pool without taking the time and money to invest in something that might potentially bring them a lot of joy. Do you possibly fit into one of these categories? Have you been considering having a pool installed in your backyard, or finding a house with a pool already installed? If so, this article is for you.

Here are some questions to ask before you take the dive and decide to buy or build a swimming pool:

Have you ever said “I wish I had a pool” – more than once?

This is a telltale sign, but the key here is the “more than once” section of the question. If you simply see a pool one or two times, enjoy the experience, and decide to sink money and time into getting your own pool, you might not realize that you’ve only experiencing the novelty of the swimming pool, not the routine fun of having a pool by itself. As strange as it sounds, we humans are a habit-forming species, and we can get used to just about anything. If this sounds like you, ask yourself the next question:

If I had this pool installed, will I still be swimming in it frequently a year from now?

Many swimming pools can be expensive, so this is no delicate question to ask. You have to really dig deep and find the answer and make a guesstimate as to what you’ll want to do in the future.

Sure, a pool may sound great on a summer day, but if you live in a state where the winters are cold, you might find that the next summer the habit has been broken and you’ve already lost interest. This leads us to our next question, which addresses how much you really like swimming in the first place:

Is it like you already own a pool?

In other words, are you so desperate to find places to swim that you’ll swim just about anywhere – such as neighbors’ or friends’ pools, public pools, or even lakes? If so, there is a paradox here: you might not need a pool as someone else who doesn’t have access to these options. On the other hand, you would be someone who would use your own pool enough to justify installing one.

Unless you can find a pool installation company that will give you dirt-cheap prices, pools can be a serious monetary investment. Even so, they require maintenance and upkeep – are you willing to embrace those challenges to get your own swimming pool?
