Swimming can be fun for a lot of people, especially on a hot summer day. Most children enjoy swimming in a lake, at a water park, at a beach or in a pool, as they can splash the water, paddle or even waddle in the water, as they have fun. While swimming is exciting and fantastic, it can be dangerous and life threatening. This is because the second most popular cause of death among children who are under the age of fourteen is drowning. This may occur on a number of occasions when the child falls into the water accidentally and may be unable to swim. Even when the child can swim, drowning usually happens so quickly that they may still succumb to this fatality.

Extra precaution should be taken by parents to ensure that their children are safe while swimming. Sudden accidents do happen, especially where there is a lot of water and there is no warning facility in place. With the number of adults that drown each year, it makes a lot of sense for parents to exercise strict safety precautions, whenever their child decides to take a swim. It is always a good idea not to allow children to swim on their own without an adult present to supervise. One of the major causes of drowning usually involves accidents such as diving and hitting the head or getting muscle cramps while swimming. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that an adult is nearby to assist in such cases or a trained CPR lifeguard is in close proximity to assist an adult in such devastating circumstances.

Another safety precaution to take when an individual has a swimming pool is to ensure that the swimming pool area has some sturdy five-foot fence surrounding the pool on all four sides which can be closed. This fencing will keep the swimming pool area safe and secure, as it will prevent people from accidentally falling into the pool, which can be potentially dangerous, especially for children and adults who may be unable to swim. Many pool owners will cover their pool completely; so as to ensure that there added prevention of accidents like a child falling into the pool. Another safety tip for pool users is to avoid getting spas and hot tubs which can be overheated by children and posing a potential hazard to lives.

Many persons should be aware that keeping rescue equipment like a life preserver, a portable telephone, a long pole with a hook end can prove to be life saving. These life saving floatation devices along with your basic CPR training can bring extra security to your fun filled swim time. This will keep swimmers safe while they are enjoying their time swimming. When anybody is swimming they should always be aware of the dangers that surround them and the potential risks of drowning. So, to keep safe while swimming, one should always be alert of all the possible dangers and whenever possible always swim with a friend, this could be critical if an accident occurs.
