Teaching Your Child How to Swim |

Stress Safety
While you may not be the one that physically teaches your child how to swim, you should let them know some basic safety rules when it comes to swimming. It’s your responsibility to make sure that they’re never to swim without the presence of a parent or lifeguard. It’s important that you don’t scare your child away from swimming by being too stern about it however. You should explain it like you’re talking about crossing the street; explain that they just need someone there with them when they do it so that nothing bad happens.
Swim Lessons
Whether you think so or not it’s probably a very good idea to get your child enrolled into some swim lessons. While you may be able to teach your child some basics, swim instructors are professionals who teach kids how to swim for a living and will be able to diagnose any problem your child is suffering while trying to become accustomed to the water. You can have your child show you his progress and then you teach him other little tricks and things that you may think he’ll find valuable. It’s a good idea to act interested when your child is showing you what he has learned as it will create a sense of accomplishment and inspire him to continue on.
Fear
Fear is perhaps the hardest barrier for a child to overcome when they’re struggling with learning how to swim. Sympathize with your child and explain to them that it’s okay that they’re scared but you need to tell them that there is really nothing to be afraid of. Your should notify your swim instructor if your child is afraid of the water so that they don’t expect quite as much out of the child and are able to help them overcome their fears.
Once your child completes their swimming lessons you will enjoy the fact that they may like an activity that is considered the best full body exercise there is.
