Three Reasons to Keep On Cycling

Keep on biking.

Keep on biking.

When you want to build a habit that is sustainable over a long period of time, it often requires some deep reasons to serve as motivation. Riding your bike to work is a great excuse to get some exercise, but once your car is fixed, will you still keep the bike active or will it sit around in your garage? To keep cycling, it helps to remember that there is more than one reason to go out with your bike.

Reason #1: Lifelong exercise. Cycling isn’t only a great way to get some relatively moderate exercise, but it’s a type of exercise that you can enjoy well into your twilight years. It’s easy on the joints, and often an option for former runners who don’t want any more pounding on their knees. You can take leisurely bicycle rides or attack tough terrain for a more involved workout – really, it’s up to you. Constantly planning out new routes and taking a spin around the neighborhood is a great way to keep exercising your whole life.

Riding your bike even three times a week is one way you can remind yourself to stay active. Adding new roads and trails on your route will also keep things novel so that you don’t get bored – just be sure to be cautious on the roads and always wear a helmet.

Reason #2: Saving money. Transportation costs money, even if it’s in a car you own outright. Riding your bike around for actual transportation is a great way to keep the car in the garage when gas prices rise, not to mention avoiding auto accidents that might increase your insurance rates – just make sure you avoid bicycle accidents too.

The more you use your bike to get around, the more life you’ll have in your car. You’ll save on maintenance costs because you’re logging less miles and you might find yourself waiting longer before you get the next car.

Reason #3: An excuse to get out! Life on the couch is comfortable, but ultimately not that fulfilling. Getting out on the bike is a great way to meet other people in your community – especially the fellow cycling enthusiasts. If you work from home, your bike can put a lot of distance between you and your house or apartment quickly without spending any money on gas. Gotta love that, right?
