Why You Should Take Swimming Lessons |

But competition isn’t a reason to get into swimming, unless you’re a naturally competitive person. If you’ve never learned to swim, or if you’re a beginner to the art and sport of swimming, you’ll want to take some swimming lessons.
Here’s why:
Swimming is a life skill, something that might ultimately prove as important as CPR. Even if you live in Kansas, you never know what kind of situations might arise that could, at the very least, call for someone with rudimentary swimming skills. You don’t want to be caught in a flash flood or the rolling current of a river and say to yourself, “wow, I should have learned to swim.”
While that’s unlikely, swimming’s role as a life skill doesn’t end there. Swimming is enjoyed as a social activity, and if you can’t swim, activities like going to the beach, taking a dip in a hotel pool, or going sailing in a boat will be more serious to you than they will to others. You don’t want to turn down an invitation because you can’t swim in a pool, and you don’t want to be the party pooper if you go.
These skills are particular important to learn as children, when exercise and activity, as well as social interaction, are crucial to development. If you’ve ever taken swim lessons and need a reason to have your children take them, consider your own experience with swimming. Have you swam with friends, swam for fun, and even swam for exercise? There’s virtually no limit to the possibilities of swimming, and that’s what you’ll want to keep in mind as you consider the viability of real swimming instruction.
Swimming also opens up a range of other possible activities – who would want to own a house on the lake unless they could swim? Or go sailing? Or deep-sea fishing, white-water rafting, or surfing? Swimming is a basic skill that many of us take for granted – and even if you have experience with swimming without an instructor, you’ll be better at it if you do. And you’ll be more confident during water activities, while boating, and while near the water in general.
There are plenty of reasons why you should take swimming lessons, while the only reason “why not” usually boils down to money. Consider swimming lessons an investment – and investment in yourself, and an investment that grants you access to all sorts of activities you couldn’t enjoy before.
